Economy of Uzbekistan: A snapshot

Uzbekistan, situated in Central Asian region, is a rapidly developing lower-middle-income economy and it is one of the most diversified economies in this region. The incumbent government has adopted bold reforms measures in recent years, liberalizing Uzbekistan’s economy and improving prospects for private sector development. In 2023, the government of Uzbekistan adopted the National Development Strategy 2030, with an objective to uplift Uzbekistan to an upper-middle-income country by the end of this decade. Priority areas for development has been chosen as empowering citizens; ensuring the population’s well-being through sustainable economic growth; protecting the environment and conserving natural resources; and developing public services with a focus on people’s needs.

While high headline inflation and low job creation is a concern following the geo-political and economic crisis especially in the CIS region, the country is confident on its strong private consumption, net exports and sizeable inflow of FDI in strategically important sectors like agriculture, transport, construction, and renewable energy.

With a very impressive average GDP growth of 6% in the last five years, the country has become one of the world’s top reformers, outperforming many lower-middle-income economies.

Bilateral Trade between India and Uzbekistan

Uzbekistan is an important trade partner of India in the Central Asian region. India’s merchandise exports to Uzbekistan recorded a noticeable 16.6% CAGR between 2020-21 and 2024-25 as it increased to USD 517.72 million in 2024-25 from USD 280.07 million in 2020-21. Further, merchandise exports to Uzbekistan grew by an impressive 34.35% during Apr-Jan 2025-26 over the same period last fiscal by registering USD 565.33 million of exports as against USD 420.80 million during the same period last fiscal.

Engineering exports performed even better in comparison to broader merchandise exports as the former surged to USD 155 million in 2024-25 from USD 50.79 million in 2020-21, securing a CAGR of 32.3%. However, during the current fiscal, engineering exports to Uzbekistan conceded decline in exports following a significant drop in exports of Auto Components/Parts, which is India’s topmost engineering product group exported to the country. This drop is not exclusive to India as Uzbekistan’s global import of Auto components/Parts has declined in 2025. Other than Auto components/Parts, India’s major engineering product groups exported to Uzbekistan include Industrial Machinery, Medical and scientific instruments, AC, refrigeration machinery etc., and Products of iron and steel.

Focus product: The focus product of CaPhEx includes Pharmaceutical Machinery and Large medical devices. Exports of Medical and scientific instruments to Uzbekistan is not very substantial but the trend is rising as exports almost doubled to USD 4.16 million during the first ten months of the current fiscal as against USD 2.78 million during the same period last fiscal.

Opportunity in engineering industry of Uzbekistan

Being the most populous county in the Central Asian region, demand for advanced medical technology, modern hospital infrastructure, and pharmaceutical products has been increasing rapidly in Uzbekistan as the government continues to invest in healthcare. On the other hand, due to limited domestic manufacturing capabilities, Uzbekistan’s medical equipment sector is highly dependent on imports. This reflects substantial opportunity for large scale global players in healthcare and allied sectors like Medical devices in Uzbekistan. Moreover, the government therein is actively reforming the healthcare sector by easing foreign investment restrictions, providing tax incentives, and reducing import duties to attract global medical companies that has created a favorable business environment for foreign manufacturers and investors. The time therefore is apt for the Indian medical equipment suppliers to eye Uzbekistan as an attractive business destination and exhibitions like CaPhEx provide the right platform.
