Economy of South Africa : A snapshot

South Africa is the largest economy of the African continent. It is a highly diversified economy with service sector, including finance, real estate, business, government, retail, transport, and communications, driving the GDP growth with the largest share in GDP. South Africa is one of the largest producers of platinum, gold, coal, and iron ore. While Mining remains the major contributor to GDP, Manufacturing, agriculture, and tourism are also playing significant role in economic development, contributing to rising employment and strengthening foreign exchange reserve. GDP however registering a weak growth rate of mere 0.7% on an average over the last decade constrained by governance weaknesses, infrastructure bottlenecks, limited competition, skills shortages, and electricity shortages. South Africa is an economy with one of the world's highest inequality levels.

The year 2026 sees a cautiously improving macroeconomic outlook for South Africa with modest GDP growth, easing inflation and decline in interest rate. Labour market is also showing slight improvement and currency has been strengthening steadily. As per UN, high commodity prices, recovering logistics networks, and ongoing investment in renewable energy are expected to lift real GDP growth to around 2.0% in 2026.

Bilateral Trade between India and South Africa

India's bilateral trade with South Africa reached an all-time high of USD 19.2 billion in 2023-24 but then declined to USD 18 billion due to drop in India's exports. India's merchandise exports to the largest African economy has witnessed significant growth at 17.4% CAGR between 2020-21 and 2024-25. Exports reached a high of USD 8.71 billion in 2023-24 but then declined to USD 7.46 billion in the next fiscal due to decline in exports of Mineral Fuels. Engineering exports also recorded good growth during the last five fiscals to 2024-25 with a CAGR of 12.2% and reached USD 2.5 billion in fiscal 2024-25. During the first nine months of 2025-26, engineering exports to South Africa secured 15.7% year-on-year growth. India's major engineering exports to South Africa include Motor vehicle/cars, Other construction machinery, Industrial machinery, Auto components/parts, Electric machinery and equipment, Aluminium and its products, and Auto tyres and tubes among others.

The focus product of this exhibition is mainly comprised of 'Railway Transport Equipment and parts' where India's exports to South Africa is mere USD 3 million. However, India's exports is significant in related segments like industrial machinery, Electric machinery, Construction machinery and Aircrafts etc. This exhibition therefore will be a good opportunity for the exporters to enhance exports of Railway transport equipment as Indian engineering products has already created a Brand Value is South Africa.

Opportunity in engineering industry of South Africa

South Africa is the largest economy of Africa and is an emerging one. It has a strong industrial base and it witnesses considerable progresses in infrastructural development, energy sector and industrial sectors like agricultural, mechanical, civil and IT engineering. As infrastructure development is a priority for the government and energy crisis is a challenge for the economy, the scope in several areas of engineering is substantial, especially when the market is driven by private investments. Trade exhibitions on engineering is South African soil will surely bring considerable opportunities for Indian engineering manufacturers and exporters to enter as well as expand their businesses in that country.
