Ghana's economy: A snapshot

Ghana is the 10th largest economy of Africa and the second largest in West Africa after Nigeria. The economy of Ghana has a diverse and rich resource base, including the manufacturing and export of digital technology goods, automotive and ship construction and export, and the export of resources such as hydrocarbons and industrial minerals. The country is a major producer of gold, cocoa, and oil, with gold alone accounting for nearly half of export earnings. The economy showed good resilience with strong growth of 5.7 percent in 2024 and continued growth in the first quarter of 2025 of 5.3 percent. Notable progress have been observed towards debt restructuring, controlling inflation to some extent, and strong reserve accumulation supported by robust trade performance.

The economy however faces some challenges including inflationary pressure, delay in completing debt restructuring, fiscal consolidation, and exchange rate volatility on the domestic front and escalation of geopolitical conflict and commodity price volatility on the global front. These may act as a spoilsport to macroeconomic stability and growth prospects. GDP growth is projected to moderate to 4% in 2025 but is expected to gradually return to 5% over the medium term.

Bilateral Trade between India and Ghana

India's merchandise exports to Ghana haw shown noticeable increase in the post-COVID period as exports crossed USD 1 billion in 2021-22. Exports grew from USD 862.5 million in 2020-21 to USD 1,346.75 million in 2024-25, registering a CAGR of 11.8%. Engineering exports outpaced its broader merchandise exports achieving a CAGR of 20.3% during this period as engineering exports to Ghana more than doubled to USD 600.2 million in 2024-25 from USD 286.9 million in 2020-21. In 2024-25, engineering exports to Ghana made a significant jump of around 200 million over the previous fiscal registering 46.1% growth. India's major engineering product groups exported to Ghana include 'Other construction machinery', Motor vehicles/Cars, 'Industrial machinery for dairy, Agricultural Goods etc.', ‘Products of iron and steel', and 'Electric machinery and equipment' among others.

The product category falls under the event mainly comprised of Electrical machinery, and other construction machinery. Engineering exports to Ghana in these two product category taken together nearly doubled in fiscal 2024-25 to USD 243.03 million from USD 124.9 million, securing an impressive 94.6% growth.

Opportunity in Ghana's engineering industry

The trend of India's engineering exports to Ghana in recent years reflects substantial increase in demand for Indian products in Ghana. On the other hand, economy of Ghana has been showing noticeable resilience to shocks by securing stable growth that is expected to be seen from 2026 after a moderation in 2025. Driven by economic strength, Ghana's engineering industry is also growing, based on oil & gas, mining, construction, and government initiatives like "One District, One Factory" (1D1F) policy for mechanical and electrical roles. Focus on manufacturing and energy will be beneficial for Indian exporters or investors to enhance their footprints in this West African nation. Time is therefore apt to tap the opportunity offered by Ghana in the engineering sector.
