Economic scenario of Indonesia

Indonesia is the largest economy in Southeast Asia and a key emerging market globally. In 2025, its nominal GDP is estimated at about USD 1.44 trillion, ranking it as the 17th largest economy in the world, while on a PPP basis it is among the top 10 globally, reflecting its large domestic market and purchasing power. Over the years, Indonesia has demonstrated steady and resilient GDP growth, expanding from around USD 1.06 trillion in 2020 to USD 1.32 trillion in 2022 to USD 1.40 trillion in 2024, before reaching current levels in 2025. This consistent upward trend underscores Indonesia's strong macroeconomic fundamentals, supported by manufacturing, commodities, and domestic consumption. Following the COVID‑19 pandemic, Indonesia's economy has shown strong and resilient recovery, supported by prudent macroeconomic management and domestic demand. After contracting in 2020, GDP rebounded steadily, with growth normalising at around 5% annually during 2022–2025. Inflation has remained relatively contained. On the trade front, Indonesia experienced a strong post‑pandemic surge during 2021–2023, driven mainly by commodities such as coal, palm oil, nickel, and other minerals, benefiting from high global prices and demand. Manufacturing exports, including electronics, automotive components, and basic metals, also gained momentum as global supply chains diversified. However, in 2024– 2025, export growth moderated due to softening global demand

India and Indonesia's Bilateral Trade

India's exports to Indonesia expanded strongly up to 2022‑23, with merchandised exports peaking at USD 10.0 billion and engineering exports at USD 2.6 billion, reflecting robust post‑pandemic demand. However, both segments witnessed a contraction in 2023‑24 and 2024‑25, with merchandised exports declining to USD 5.38 billion and engineering exports to USD 1.94 billion, amid global demand moderation. Despite this decline, engineering goods continue to form a significant share (36%) of India's exports to Indonesia. As of 2024‑25, Indonesia ranks 19th among India's global destinations for engineering exports, accounting for about 1.7% of India's total engineering exports within overall merchandised exports, underscoring its continued strategic importance.

India's exports of industrial machinery to Indonesia registered a moderate growth of 5% in 2024‑25, increasing from USD 450.2 million in 2023‑24 to USD 473.0 million. Importantly, the share of industrial machinery in India's total engineering exports to Indonesia rose sharply from 19% to 24%, indicating a growing emphasis on higher‑value capital goods and strengthening industrial linkages between the two countries.

Opportunity in Indonesia's industrial sector

Indonesia's industrial sector presents strong opportunities, supported by steady economic growth, rising domestic demand, and sustained government focus on industrialisation, infrastructure, and manufacturing upgradation. Demand is growing across key segments such as machinery, equipment, automotive components, electricals, and industrial automation, driven by investments in mining, energy transition, construction, and downstream manufacturing. As Southeast Asia's largest economy, Indonesia is increasingly emerging as a regional manufacturing and supply‑chain hub.

For Indian exporters, Indonesia offers a natural and complementary market, given India's strengths in engineering goods, capital machinery, and process equipment. Indonesia's push towards value‑added manufacturing and technology adoption aligns well with Indian industrial capabilities, creating scope for enhanced exports, partnerships, and long‑term industrial collaboration

In this context, the upcoming Industrial Week, Jakarta, scheduled from 3–6 June 2026, assumes particular significance. Participation in such global exhibitions can serve as a strategic gateway for Indian exporters to showcase their capabilities, engage directly with Indonesian buyers and policymakers, build networks with industry leaders, and enhance market access and brand visibility. Active engagement through international exhibitions can thus play a crucial role in strengthening India's industrial and engineering export presence in the Indonesian market.
