Economic scenario of United Kingdom
As of 2024, the United Kingdom remains a significant player in the global economy. It is the sixth-largest national economy in the world by nominal GDP and the ninth-largest by purchasing power parity (PPP). The UK constitutes 3.1% of the world's nominal GDP and 2.3% of the world's GDP by PPP. The economic outlook for 2024 shows some positive developments. The IMF has raised its forecast for the UK's GDP growth to 1.1% for 2024, up from an earlier projection of 0.7%. This improvement is attributed to lower inflation and anticipated cuts in the Bank of England's interest rates.
Inflation has fallen to its lowest rate in over three years, which is expected to support household finances and spending. Gradual fiscal consolidation is necessary to support the return of inflation to target levels and rebuild fiscal space after substantial support during the pandemic and energy crisis. Tax reforms are also needed to strengthen revenues to meet growing spending needs due to ageing and the green transition. Boosting labour supply and enhancing business investment are critical to lifting productivity. Supply-side reforms are needed to provide businesses with certainty regarding taxation and land use planning. Despite the challenges, the UK is expected to be the fourth best-performing G7 economy relative to pre-pandemic levels, outperforming France, Japan, and Germany.
Bilateral Trade between India and UK
The bilateral trade relationship between India and the United Kingdom continues to be robust and mutually beneficial. In the fiscal year 2023-24, the total trade between the two countries increased to USD 21.34 billion, up from USD 20.36 billion in 2022-23. It has consistently been among India's top 10 global export partners and among top 20 global import partners. While, India ranks as 14th import destination for United Kingdom during 2023. Between 2019-20 and 2023-24, India’s exports to UK increased from USD 8.74 billion to USD 12.92 billion and India’s imports from UK increased from US$ 6.71 billion in 2019-20 to US$ 8.41 billion in 2023-24. During this period, India became a net exporter to UK and the trade balance remained positive consistently.Negotiations for a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between India and the UK have been ongoing, with both countries aiming to enhance market access and reduce trade barriers.Looking ahead to 2024-25, the focus will likely remain on strengthening this bilateral relationship further, with potential new agreements and trade policies aimed at boosting economic cooperation.
The product profile of UK’s SUBCON dedicated to subcontract manufacturing supply chains, under the engineering industry. In 2023-24, India’s global exports of engineering goods stood at USD 109.32 billion as against US$ 107.04 billion witnessed in 2022-23 registering a growth of 2.13% over the same period last year. Opportunity for Engineering sector in UK
There is ample scope for India’s engineering industry to explore and enhance opportunities for trade and investment in the UK market. Key sectors with significant potential include electrical machinery and equipment, which encompasses products like transformers and generators, and industrial machinery and parts, ranging from heavy machinery to precision instruments. The UK’s construction and infrastructure projects create a consistent demand for iron and steel products, offering opportunities for Indian exporters. Additionally, the UK’s automotive industry, including both traditional and electric vehicles, relies heavily on imported auto components and parts, presenting a lucrative market for Indian manufacturers. The healthcare sector’s need for advanced medical and surgical instruments also provides a substantial opportunity for Indian companies specializing in these products. By focusing on these sectors, Indian engineering firms can strengthen their presence in the UK market, fostering greater trade and investment opportunities.
As the UK’s largest manufacturing supply chain SUBCON 2024, it attracts a diverse range of industries, including aerospace, automotive, defense, and medical. Indian engineering firms can leverage this platform to connect with senior manufacturers and key decision-makers, potentially expanding their market reach and securing new business partnerships. The event also offers valuable learning opportunities through CPD-accredited workshops, product demonstrations, and keynote presentations, providing insights into the latest industry trends and innovations. Additionally, extensive marketing support and interactive networking events at SUBCON 2025 can enhance brand visibility and foster meaningful business relationships. Participating in this show could significantly boost the presence of Indian engineering companies in the UK market, further strengthening the bilateral trade relationship between India and the UK.
