Sri Lanka presents a promising market for Indian engineering exporters. The country has seen robust growth in key manufacturing sectors such as construction materials, packaging, automotive components, and light engineering goods. These sectors are expanding due to increased infrastructure development, urbanization, and industrial recovery. The presence and growth of these industries naturally drive demand for a wide range of engineering products-machinery, tools, electrical equipment, and fabricated metal products. This creates a significant opportunity for Indian engineering exporters to deepen their footprint in the Sri Lankan market catering to the evolving needs of these sectors.
In FY 2024–25, India's engineering exports showed a mixed performance across categories. While overall growth was driven by sectors like aircraft and spacecraft parts (430% growth), motor vehicles (147%), and IC engines (107%), traditional heavyweights like shipbuilding and iron and steel saw significant declines of -42% and -12% respectively. The ship, boat, and floating structures category, despite its decline, still held the largest share (23%) of total engineering exports. The rise in high-tech and automotive components suggests a shift toward value-added and precision engineering exports, while the drop in core industrial materials may reflect global demand fluctuations or pricing pressures. This diversification in export performance highlights both emerging strengths and areas needing policy support.
Sri Lanka's economy demonstrated a strong recovery in 2024, recording a real GDP growth rate of 5%, surpassing the World Bank's earlier projection of 4.4%.This growth was primarily driven by robust performance in the industry and services sectors, particularly in construction and tourism-related services. However, the World Bank projects a moderation in growth to 3.5% in 2025, citing lingering effects of the economic crisis and structural challenges. The IMF also notes that by the end of 2024, Sri Lanka had recovered nearly 40% of the economic losses incurred between 2018 and 2023.
India's merchandise trade with Sri Lanka exhibited mixed trends over the recent period. In 2023–24, India's exports to Sri Lanka declined by 19.5%, dropping from USD 5.11 billion to USD 4.12 billion, reflecting a temporary slowdown in trade flows. However, this downward trend is expected to reverse, with a 15.3% increase projected for the period April–February 2025, indicating signs of recovery and renewed demand. On the other hand, India's imports from Sri Lanka rose sharply by 32.1% in 2023–24, reaching USD 1.42 billion, showcasing stronger export performance from Sri Lanka. Nevertheless, a moderate decline of 8.8% is forecasted for the following period, suggesting a possible stabilization in trade volumes.
India's engineering trade with Sri Lanka has shown notable dynamism in recent years. In 2023–24, India's engineering exports to Sri Lanka grew by 23.8%, reflecting strong demand for Indian engineering goods in the island nation. This upward trend is expected to continue, with projections indicating a further 28.6% increase during the period April–February 2025. India's engineering exports to Sri Lanka projected to contribute 25.2% of total merchandise exports during the period April–February 2025. On the import side, India's engineering imports from Sri Lanka surged by an impressive 250% in 2023–24, highlighting a significant rise in Sri Lanka's engineering output and trade engagement. However, this momentum is expected to moderate, with a 24.8% decline projected in the following period, possibly due to market adjustments or supply-side constraints.
