Economic scenario of Brazil

Brazil is the world’s fifth-largest country and Latin America’s largest economy. Brazilian economy has been experiencing a slow but steady recovery in recent years. In 2022, GDP grew by an estimated 2.8%, mainly driven household consumption, private investment, and exports. South America's largest economy is expected to grow at a slower pace in the coming years, with the IMF predicting a GDP growth of 1% in 2023 and 1.9% in 2024.

Brazil is a large middle-income country that aspires to become a strong leader of the global South. Brazil has abundant natural resources and a relatively diversified economy. The country is the world's largest producer of coffee, sugar cane and oranges, and is one of the world’s largest producers of soya. With forests covering half of the country and the world’s largest rain forest, Brazil is the world’s fourth largest exporter of timber.Brazil is also a large industrial power, and has benefited greatly from its mineral ore wealth. The country is the world’s second largest exporter of iron, and one of the world’s main producers of aluminium and coal. As an oil producer, Brazil is aiming to become energy independent in the near future, with reserves that could make it one of the top five oil producers in the world. Furthermore, the country is increasingly asserting itself in the textile, aeronautics, pharmaceutical, automobile, steel and chemical industry sectors. Many of the world’s large automobile manufacturers have set up production plants in Brazil.

Bilateral Trade between India and Brazil

Brazil is the topmost destination for India’s engineering exports in the Latin American region. India’s engineering exports to Brazil reached at USD 1588.5 million in 2022-23, registering a growth of 2.6% over 2021-22.

During the current fiscal 2023-24 Indian engineering exports to Brazil reached USD 1176.8 million during the first seven months (Apr-Oct 2023-24) securing 7.7% rise over that of Apr-Oct 2022-23 at USD 1092.8 million. India’s major engineering product groups exported to Brazil include Auto components/parts, Industrial Machinery for dairy etc, Electric machinery and equipment, Auto tyres and tubes, Iron and steel, IC engines and parts, Products of iron and steel, Other construction machinery aluminium, products of aluminium, Medical and Scientific Instruments.

India’s Merchandise and Engineering Exports to Brazil (USD Bn.)

The product profile of FEIMEC broadly comprises of products of Industrial Machinery. India’s exports of Industrial machinery for dairy & other construction machinery to Brazil grew by almost 3% year-on-year 2022-23. During the first seven months of 2023-24 India’s exports of other construction machinery reached more than USD 51 million of shipment. Rising exports from the focus product segments for the last couple of years will surely be encouraging as well as beneficial for the member exporters exporting those products to Brazil.

Opportunity for Indian Engineering Industry in Brazil

India and Brazil possess complementary economies, creating opportunities for trade and investment cooperation. Indian engineering industry has enormous potential to explore and make its prominence felt in the Brazilian and Latin American market in general. Recently there has been several G2G meetings between both the nations which is a strong indication of the trade to rise significantly between both the nations. A greater cooperation between India and Brazil, two of the world´s largest democracies, is in order and will certainly benefit both countries, since their economies can share enormous synergies and supplement each other. Thus this is the apt time for Indian exporters to participate in the FEIMEC and explore the Brazilian market.
