Economic scenario of Germany

Europe had a strong rebound in FY 2021 from the aftereffects of the COVID pandemic. Germany is the fourth largest economy in the world after the United States, China and Japan and the largest economy in Europe. In recent year, Germany like other European economies have slowed, reflecting tighter macroeconomic policies and high energy costs.

With inflation continues to ease and real disposable household income increases, investment and private consumption are expected to recover to their pre-pandemic levels. Number of sectors including Construction is set to resume growth which will be supported by high housing demand.

Bilateral Trade between India and Germany

EU is an important market for India. Germany is an important export destination for the Indian engineering industry in the Euro Area. It has consistently been among India's top 15 global partners and was the 12th largest trading partner in 2021-22. Between 2018-19 and 2022-23, India’s exports to Germany increased from USD 8.90 billion to USD 10.13 billion. During this period, Germany’s engineering imports from India also increased to reach USD 3.95 billion, However, there is still significant potential for expansion.

The product profile of Germany’s CWIEME 2024 consists of products related to coil winding, transformer, electric motor, e-mobility under the engineering industry. In 2022-23, India’s exports of Electric Machinery and Equipment stood at USD 10.97 billion which is almost 6% growth over the same period last year. India holds the place among Germany’s top 25 suppliers for electric machinery with a mere share of less than 1% in Germany’s overall import.

Opportunity for Indian Electrical Industry in Germany

Germany as an important partner for India who can largely contribute in the process of Indian economic development. Germany is India's largest trading partner in Europe in overall merchandise trade and 10th largest source of FDI among all nations of the world. Germany is witnessing rapid and continuous technological advancement and has achieved a prowess in manufacturing.

Electrical industry is one of the dominating industries in Germany and at the same time, electrical industry products are the largest exported engineering product group to Germany by India. Therefore, ample scope exists for Indian manufacturers of electrical and related products in Germany and a growth in year-on-year exports of this product groups necessarily reflects that more opportunities are there in the coming years. In this background, it is an apt time for India to response to the demand of the electrical and related industry of Germany and enhance its share in the German market through participation in the CWIEME 2024.
