Russia is the fourth largest economy of Europe, ninth-largest economy of the world in terms of nominal GDP and sixth-largest by Purchasing Power Parity (PPP). The economic scenario of Russia has changed with its invasion in Ukraine and the subsequent restrictions imposed on the nation by several developed economies especially in energy and financial sectors. However, the situation did not turn up as worse as was initially apprehended. The economy shrank in 2022 but not at double digit. Inflation is one of the key concerns at present and is expected to soar up in 2023. According to independent analysis of World Bank, International Monetary Fund (IMF) and Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), Russia’s GDP in 2022 is expected to drop by at least 3.4% in the best-case scenario and by up to 4.5% in the worst-case scenario.
Russia is the topmost destination for India’s engineering exports in the CIS region. India’s engineering exports to Russia reached its all-time high at USD 740.9 million in 2019-20 but then declined by 9.2 percent to USD 672.8 million in 2020-21 due to slump in global economic activities following the lockdowns imposed by all nations to combat the rapid spread of COVID-19. In 2021-22, engineering exports to Russia from India once again reached its record high at USD 914.6 million as the global economy opened up gradually and the impact of COVID-led Pandemic started waning off. India’s major engineering product groups exported to Russia include Iron and Steel, Auto components/parts, Construction machinery, Industrial machinery, and Electric machinery and equipment among others.
The product profile of Metallobrabotka show is broadly comprised of Machine tools and Metal products. India’s exports of Machine tools to Russia was USD 8 million in 2020-21 but that saw a 48 percent jump to USD around 12 million in 2021-22. In the Metalworking segment, India’s exports to Russia was recorded at USD 50 million in 2020-21 that surged to USD 57.6 million in 2021-22. Products of Iron and Steel led the exports from this segment to Russia with a share of over 80 percent followed by Copper products.
Engineering industry is traditionally a source of economic innovations in Russia. Major engineering segments in Russia include Trucks and cars, airplanes, Power systems, Machine tools, and Industrial machinery. Although, the current unfavourable economic scenario driven by the Pandemic and afterwards by the war have affected the progress of engineering industry in Russia, the government has been at its best to ensure continuous progress of this sector as one of the vital sectors for its overall economic growth. As machine tools and industrial machinery are two of the major sectors in Russian engineering industry, there is a lot of scope for Indian exporters to capture a good share of the market therein and Metallobrabotka will surely be a desired platform for that.
